Rothenburg, Germany

How lucky am I that Jordan was given a day off work in the middle of the week?  I scored a day-date and we had a great time going to Rothenburg. By the way, there are several Rothenburgs in Germany, and the one I'm talking about our Garmin GPS couldn't find, so if you are headed there for a visit make sure you are going to Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
When we got to the town we were welcomed by the best preserved medieval wall in all of Germany.
The wall lines the entire town, and was built in the 13th and 14th centuries.  Parts of it were destroyed by American bombs in World War II, but luckily were rebuilt with the help of worldwide donations.
Beautiful Rothenburg; "the red fortress above the Tauber River" with different colored houses and their red roofs-so German.
Up here is a great perch to admire the views and this house was my favorite!
Back on ground level we started to explore.  Rothenburg is such a small town that it is easy to stroll around it on your own.  Luckily I had Jordan as my tour guide though, since he had been once before.
If you like the looks of the doors and the side wall decor, wait till you see the buildings.
Every house a different color
Taking a peek into someones entry way...everything is so green, it's that time of year!
A real charming area I'm tell ya...
...with a touch of a Medieval feel.  This is one of the most photographed places in Rothenburg: Siebers Gate
Rothenburg is a great little shopping mecca for tourists.  You can find all the traditional German souvenirs here: cuckoo clocks, christmas ornaments, and beer stains.  There's something for everyone.
Nice shopping streets
Lots of the local shops sell fresh lavender products, it smells so nice and makes for great potpourri!
Such a beautiful area, I love this photo below!
 Ah the selfie
Rothenburg has one of my favorite town squares
Surrounded by great buildings with such character
We went out for dinner at a delicious German restaurant before the night fun started.  TripAdvisor didn't let us down, and we feasted at Alter Keller (which is also a Bed and Breakfast if you're looking for a cozy little Inn).  We enjoyed:
Jager Schnitazel with potatoes and mushrooms
Pork shoulder with delicious apple cabbage and knoodle
...and for dessert we had a "schneeball" cookie with marzipan dipped in chocolate...mm...mmm...good!
For a thoroughly fun filled hour of medieval entertainment  at 8PM we took the Night Watchman's Tour
The watchman takes tourists on his rounds, while telling the history of Rothenburg and some crude jokes along the way.  With his warning call we were off to protect the city~
He's the most popular man in Rothenburg, and attracts some serious herds of people!
 Serious flocking going on...
He told some great stories, and made everyone laugh
At the conclusion of our evening we walked through a beautiful park as the sun was setting
and took a look at the beautiful Tauber Valley before we bid adieu
Auf Wiedersehen Rothenburg!

  1. That looks like the same watchman that was there 10 plus years ago when we were there. I love his tour....so informative.
