Lake Bohinj and Vintgar Gorge, Slovenia

Lake Bohinj is a great place to visit if you like to be active and love nature.
Walking down into the little town by the lake is so beautiful, check it out:
Only about 20 minutes away from Lake Bled is where you can find Lake Bohinj.  It is bigger, quieter, and most importantly, more authentic and less touristy than Bled. We stayed in the Lake Bohinj area when we visited Lake Bled with Florence and Greg.  We found a great hotel, Hotel Gasperin, with a swinging deal of breakfast included!
Our nice little room for around $75.00 a night:
One of the really great benefits of the hotel was that they provided us with FREE bike rentals.  We took the bikes out on an 12 mile ride.
It was beautiful, we had a great time biking through little villages and seeing the beautiful countryside.  We saw lots of roofed hayracks (enojni); they were everywhere.  It seems a little old fashioned to hang hay to dry, but because of the frequent rainfall they seem to come in handy!
They are pretty tall, considering Greg is 6'3.
The scenery is so beautiful, green, and peaceful.  Here is Jordan and his ladies:
We rode by houses with amazing flower boxes:
...and there were amazing flower gardens too!
We really liked this idea of skies on the roof... I spy another hayrack
I took this selfie on Greg's phone when I was supposed to be taking a picture of the family, I wondered if he noticed it...hehe
We came across a few beehives.  They are typical to Slovenia and are creatively decorated with paintings that the beekeepers think makes it easier for the bees to find their way home.
At the end of our ride we were at the pearl of the Julian Alps: Lake Bohinj.  We were surrounded by towering mountain ranges, and had beautiful water to swim in-we went back the next day, but I didn't have a camera for photos.
There were little platforms to swim out to, and people rafting and kayaking in the lake.  It was a great way to cool off from biking, and refreshing!
If you're unsure where on a map we are in this post, Lake Bohinj is about 30 miles from Italy, so of course I would hope they have good Italian food.  A seafood pizza, my favorite!
We also went to a local favorite, Strud'l where we sampled a meat and potato plate:
It was quite good but their apple strud'l was even better!
Before heading onto Ljubljana we went on a nice mile and a half nature walk through the Vintgar Gorge.  CAUTION:When visiting the park there is no butterfly catching or car washing allowed.
The fresh bright blue water sure was rushing:
Jordan and Florence enjoying the trail:
Say Cheese!

We had a wonderful time in seeing all that nature has to offer.  Keep traveling with us to Ljublana in our next post!

  2. Those flower boxes are so dreamy and beautiful! I love them. Those little hayracks are hilarious- does each one dry enough for one bail of hay? I can't imagine it makes much more. What a great trip! we miss you and love you!
