The little cobblestone city center is charming.
I like how they added lots of color to make the windows pop!
We took a walk along the ramparts where we got a great view to survey the town and man-oh-man there are lots of chimneys! Look back at the roof of the German church, the six-sided "star of David" isn't a Jewish symbol, but it recalls the star that guided the wise men to Bethlehem on the first Christmas. We kept walking and found their city hall, so pretty, I would be the mayor to work in this building.
They have little shops in all the little alleyways, we were impressed by the cello maker, I can only imagine how much his hand-carved cellos' sell for-a pretty penny that's for sure.
We visited the town castle, which houses the police station in a former prison and shows off an impressive gun from 1882, plus a lovely lakeside view (our intro photo!).
mug shot:
Before lunch we went to check out the city's working water mill
pretty schnazzy
Stomachs grumbling we were ready for a good hearty lunch, and TripAdvisor never lets us down. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at Freiburger Falle! We are getting excited for what's about to come...
We shared a Rösti, which was like a hashbrown, with bacon, ham, alpine cheese, topped with a fried egg, it was dang good!
and a classique fondue with crusty bread and pototates
A trip to Murten wasn't going to be complete without stopping in at a local bakery: we went to Aebersold for the regional specialty of nidlechueche-a sweet, doughy creme tart. It kinda tasted like caramel cheese on top of an angel food cake. We prefer chocolate.
...And that's Murten for ya, a cute little town that was fun to walk around!
I love how you talk about food. It all looks so good on your blog
